Ben R. Novosad, President and Chief Executive Officer
Ben Novosad is president and chief executive officer of Capital Farm Credit. He became CEO of the Federal Land Bank Association (FLBA) of Bryan in September 1986, and since that time has guided the association through several mergers resulting in the current Capital Farm Credit. He and his team have overseen the association's growth and expansion from under $100 million in loans in the mid-1980s to approximately $7 billion today. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in agricultural economics and has over 35 years of experience with the Farm Credit System. He serves on several Farm Credit System–wide organizations, including the Presidents' Planning Committee (PPC) and the System's PPC Finance Committee.
Don VandeVanter, Senior Vice President - Chief Financial Officer
Don VandeVanter, chief financial officer, oversees the financial and capital management functions of the association. Prior to joining Capital Farm Credit in 1999, he was the CFO of Texas AgFinance, FCS for eight years. Mr. VandeVanter began his Farm Credit career with Farm Credit Bank of Texas in 1987, after working for three years in public accounting. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in accounting, and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He has previously served on various Farm Credit System workgroups.
Mark L. Hiler, Senior Vice President - Chief Operating Officer
Mark Hiler oversees the association's special assets and IT functions. Previously, he was president and chief operating officer of Southwest Texas ACA, prior to its merger with Capital Farm Credit. Mr. Hiler, who began his Farm Credit career with the FLBA of Uvalde in 1980, holds a BBA degree and a master's degree from Texas A&M University, and has served on various Farm Credit district and national committees and workgroups.
Jay Stewart, Senior Vice President - Chief Lending Officer
Jay Stewart has over 20 years of Farm Credit experience. He previously was regional president for the Hill Country region as well as branch manager in the Mason office. He also served six years as a commissioned examiner with the Farm Credit Administration and has experience managing agricultural supply and cattle operations. He represents the Texas District on the Farm Credit System Reputation Management and Centennial Planning committees. Mr. Stewart holds bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural economics from Texas A&M University.
Jeff Norte, Chief Credit Officer
Mr. Norte has over 25 years of experience in banking. He joined Capital Farm Credit September 2010, after serving CoBank for five years in Corporate Agribusiness and International Trade Finance. He managed a team of credit analysts overseeing the credit risk process comprising over $7 billion in commitments, as well as over $4 billion of trade finance activity for international accounts. Before joining CoBank, he spent 14 years as a bank regulator with the FDIC and two years working for a large bank in Kansas City. Jeff, a veteran, also has previous experience as an auditor, is a CPA and has a BS in Accounting from Mid America Nazarene University, a Graduate Degree in Banking from the University of Colorado, and a Masters in Business Administration from Concordia University, Austin, Texas.
Ronny Johnson, Chief Collateral Risk Officer
Ronny Johnson serves as Capital Farm Credit's Chief Collateral Risk Officer He has directed the collateral risk management department since April 2011. In July 1998, he joined Capital Farm Credit as Chief Appraiser after serving as appraiser for 4 years at the Farm Credit Bank of Texas. Previously Mr. Johnson was a fee appraiser for 14 years specializing in farm and ranch properties. He holds BS and MA degrees in agricultural economics and real estate from Texas A&M University. Mr. Johnson has served on various Farm Credit System workgroups including the Review, Audit and Appraisal Workgroup. Currently he serves as the Farm Credit Council representative to the Board of Trustees of The Appraisal Foundation.
Patricia A. "Patti" Gonzales, Senior Vice President - Accounting and Administration
Patti Gonzales is responsible for accounting, administration and human resources for the association. She served as chief financial officer of Southwest Texas ACA prior to its merger with Capital Farm Credit. A graduate of St. Edward's University with a BBA in accounting, she is licensed in Texas as a Certified Public Accountant. Mrs. Gonzales has more than 20 years of Farm Credit experience.
Wes Sutton, General Counsel
Wes Sutton oversees the association's legal functions as General Counsel. Previously, he served as the General Counsel for AgSouth Farm Credit in Statesboro, Georgia. Mr. Sutton, who began his Farm Credit career with AgFirst Farm Credit Bank in 2002, earned his juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of law and his bachelor's degree from Erskine College.
Phil Peabody, Senior Vice President - Risk
Phil Peabody is responsible for enterprise risk management for the association. An employee of Capital Farm Credit for 14 years, Phil's background includes managing corporate lending relationships for widely syndicated loans across the Farm Credit System. In addition, Phil served as a Branch Manager and Loan Officer in West Texas after working for ADM as an oilseeds merchandiser. Phil holds BS and MS degrees in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Texas Tech University.
Matthew Bathe, Senior Vice President - Director of Retail Credit
Mr. Bathe serves as Senior Vice President - Director of Retail Credit. Matthew began his career with the Farm Credit System in 1982 as a loan officer with the Federal Land Bank Association of Bryan. Prior to his current role he held other leadership roles within Capital Farm Credit, most recently as regional president overseeing lending operations in Central and East Texas. He is a graduate of Texas A & M University and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Economics.
Jennifer Thompson, Senior Vice President - Compliance
Jennifer Thompson has worked for Capital Farm Credit since 2013. Previously she spent seven years working for the Farm Credit Administration as a Commissioned Examiner. Her primary duty is to ensure the Association maintains policies, procedures, and practices that are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Ms. Thompson graduated from Texas A&M University in 2006 with a degree in Finance. She currently serves as Chairman of the Farm Credit System's Review, Audit, and Appraisal Workgroup.
Kim Pekar, Vice President- Internal Audit and Internal Credit Review
Kim Pekar leads the Internal Audit and Internal Credit Review functions for Capital Farm Credit. Kim earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and a Master of Science in Accounting degree from Texas A&M University and is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Internal Auditor. Before joining Capital Farm Credit in 2013, Kim worked with Ernst & Young LLP and the Texas A&M University System Internal Audit Department.
Justin Renard, Director of Information Technology
Justin Renard serves as Capital Farm Credit's Information Technology Director. An employee of Capital Farm Credit since 1999, Justin oversees the IT development, compliance and support functions of the association. Mr. Renard, before beginning his Farm Credit career with Farm Credit Bank of Texas in 1996, earned his degree in Agriculture Economics from Texas A&M University.
Stephanie Mitchell, Director of Strategic Operations
Stephanie Mitchell oversees the Project Management Office, Board management, and organizational strategic planning and implementation. She was hired by Capital Farm Credit in 2014, and previously worked for Texas A&M University in several roles primarily in information technology application development, stakeholder facilitation, event management, and project governance. Stephanie earned a bachelors in Organizational Communications from Ball State University, a Masters in Educational Human Resource Development at Texas A&M University, and is a Certified Project Manager.
Mark Loveland, Regional Senior Vice President - Credit
Mark Loveland served as chief credit officer for First Ag Credit prior to its merger with Capital Farm Credit. He has also held several positions within the credit department of the Farm Credit Bank of Texas and has over 30 years of service with the Farm Credit System. Mr. Loveland is a 1982 graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor's degree in mechanized agriculture and agricultural economics.
Roy A. West, Regional Senior Vice President - Credit
Roy West was named chief credit officer in 1998 and currently serves as the association's regional senior vice president of credit. Previously, he served as director of credit for the Farm Credit Bank of Texas and vice president of Capital of Texas FLBA. Mr. West holds a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Texas State University.

HIGH PLAINS - REGION 1
Kelly Gaskins of Knott farms approximately 7,500 acres of dryland cotton and 170 acres of irrigated cotton in Howard, Martin and Dawson counties with his son and brother. Together they also own a ditching and pipeline company, and he runs a ranching operation with his son-in-law in Collingsworth County. Mr. Gaskins earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University. He has been honored as Farmer of the Year and 4-H Adult Leader of the Year in Howard County, and he has received an Honorary American Farmer FFA degree. He is currently president of the Knott Co-op Gin board.
ROLLING PLAINS - REGION 2
Terry McAlister of Electra owns and operates a diversified farming and ranching operation in Wichita and Wilbarger counties. Spanning 40 years and three generations, the operation incorporates both stocker cattle and cow-calf enterprises, along with no-till wheat, cotton, canola and sesame field crops. Mr. McAlister attended Vernon Regional College, majoring in farm and ranch management. He has completed the Texas A&M Extension Master Marketer Program and the Southwest Graduate School of Banking's Director Development and participated in Texas A&M's Texas Executive Program for Ag Producers. Mr. McAlister has served on the Wichita County Farm Bureau board, the North Texas Rehabilitation Center board and the North Texas Rehab Livestock Auction Committee, and sits on the Northern Rolling Plains Boll Weevil Eradication Committee.
SOUTH PLAINS - REGION 3
Lance D. Morris
Lance Morris of Crosbyton, a member of Capital Farm Credit since 1974, partners with his brother in a cotton and milo farming operation in Dickens, Floyd and Crosby counties. He serves on the board of directors of Crosby County Fuel Association, Associated Cotton Growers and White River Municipal Water District. Mr. Morris is also the treasurer and a deacon of First Baptist Church in Crosbyton. His past service includes the board of directors of the South Plains Association of Governments and the Crosby County Appraisal District. Mayor of Crosbyton from 1986 to 1996, Mr. Morris holds a BBA in accounting from Texas Tech University.
WEST TEXAS - REGION 4
Lowell Woodward of Alpine, a fourth-generation West Texas rancher, has ranched in Pecos, Crockett and Brewster counties for over 30 years, where he runs a purebred Brangus cow calf operation. He also raises fine wool sheep, market goats and paint horses. Mr. Woodward was a director of the Rio Grande Electric Co-op for 12 years and also has been involved in the wind energy development in Pecos and Crockett counties. He was also a founding director of Producers Marketing Cooperative Incorporated, a wool and mohair co-op, and is also a director and committeeman of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association. He is also a past director of the Region F Water Planning Group and past president of the Pecos County Farm Bureau, also recognized as Pecos County Conservation Rancher of the year. Mr. Woodward is a graduate of the Texas Christian University Ranch Management Program.
HILL COUNTRY - REGION 5
Danny Parker of Uvalde proudly served for three years in the U.S. Army after attending Texas A&M University in Kingsville. Mr. Parker and his wife, Barbara, have farmed and ranched cotton, vegetables, grain and cattle for 33 years in Uvalde and Zavala counties. He is the executive director of the Gulf Compress in Corpus Christi. In addition, he is a member of the Uvalde County Extension program Council, the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.
WINTER GARDEN - REGION 6
Paul Aelvoet of Hondo farms and ranches in Medina County. His farming operation consists of raising corn, cotton and grain sorghum. He is also the managing partner of DA Cattle Company, a Limousin and Angus cattle seed stock operation. Mr. Aelvoet is co-chairman of the Hondo 4-H Booster Club and has served as vice president for the Medina County Fair Association, the Texas Limousin Association and the Medina County Farm Bureau. He is also a past president of the Hondo Soccer Association and currently serves on the Medina County Livestock Board. He has also received the Hondo Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Business of the Year and the 4-H Texas Salute to Excellence awards.
SOUTH TEXAS - REGION 7
Gary L. Palousek
Gary L. Palousek is a farmer in Willacy County, where he has been growing cotton, milo and sugarcane for over 40 years. He has served as a board member of three agricultural cooperatives in Willacy County and as president of two, and is a director and the secretary/treasurer of Willacy County Drainage District No. 2. He is a member and past chairman of the county committee of the USDA/Farm Service Agency and a member of the nominating committee and the advisory committee of Magic Valley Electric Co-operative. Mr. Palousek also serves on the parish council of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Raymondville.
CENTRAL TEXAS - REGION 8
Phillip Munden and his wife, Darlene, run a cow-calf and stocker operation in Bosque County. Mr. Munden graduated from Sul Ross University with a bachelor's degree in range animal science and a master's degree in animal nutrition. He has been a Farm Credit customer since the late 1970s, serving the Capital Farm Credit board since its merger with the Heart of Texas PCA. After serving as chairman of Capital Farm Credit's compensation committee and vice chairman of the board, he has served as board chairman for nine years. He is currently chairman of the Bosque County Soil and Water Conservation board; and chairs the administrative council at Walnut Springs Memorial Methodist Church.
COASTAL BEND - REGION 9
Carl Sample, Board Vice Chairman
Carl Sample is a rancher and poultry producer from Gonzales County. He is a life member of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, where he served as a member of the Calf Scramble Committee for over 25 years. He is a former director for the Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District. Mr. Sample is also a member of the Independent Cattlemen's Association of Texas and serves on the finance and audit committees of Smiley United Methodist Church. He earned a BBA with a major in accounting from Baylor University.
EAST TEXAS - REGION 10
John Malazzo, Board Chairman
John Malazzo owns and operates John Malazzo Farms in Burleson and Brazos counties, where he raises cotton, corn, milo, hay and F-1 replacement heifers. Mr. Malazzo graduated with a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Texas A&M University. Mr. Malazzo was a director of Heart of Texas PCA through its merger with Capital Farm Credit. He currently serves as a director of Producers Co-op Association of Bryan, the Texas Cotton Growers Cooperative Association - Taylor Compress, and the Farm Service Agency USDA Burleson County Committee. He is past director and agricultural representative of the Post Oak Savannah Underground Water Conservation District, the Burleson County Fair Association, the Burleson County 4-H and FFA Commercial Heifer Show and Sale, the Burleson County Field Crops Committee, the Burleson County Beef & Forage Committee, the Extension Program Council and the Extension Leadership Advisory Board.
Ronnie Riddle, Position 1
Ronnie Riddle of Abilene has owned and operated Riddle Farms for over 30 years. His farming operation lies in Jones, Fisher, Stonewall and Haskell counties and consists of cotton, wheat and cattle. A fourth-generation farmer, Mr. Riddle graduated from Texas Tech University in 1979, with a bachelor's degree in animal science. He is a past president of the Rolling Plains Cotton Association and the Texas Cotton Producers, and is a past board member of the National Cotton Council and the Cotton Board. In 1995, Mr. Riddle was named the New York Stock Exchange "Cotton Marketer of the Year." Mr. Riddle has supported the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and currently is a board member of the BSA's Texas Trails Council. He recently was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, highest award that can be presented to a volunteer by a BSA Council.
Dale A. Crenwelge, Position 2
Dale Crenwelge operates agricultural and investment properties in Central and West Texas. He received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1981, and then worked for Conoco as a project engineer. He subsequently earned his MBA from Texas A&M University in 1985, and became a real estate broker and investor, owning ranch, commercial real estate and residential development properties. He has served as a trustee of the American Realty Trust. A past trustee and president of the Comfort ISD School Board and past director of Ambleside School and Hill Country Higher Education Foundation, Mr. Crenwelge currently is a trustee of Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg. He also has been active in the Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Boerne and Comfort Chambers of Commerce.
Joe David Yates, Position 3
Joe David Yates of Mason County is involved in a variety of family ranching and agribusiness interests. These include Bay City Feed in Bay City, Texas; cow-calf operations in the Texas Hill Country, Hudspeth County, Texas, and Otero County, N.M.; and a yearling ranch in Colfax and Union counties in New Mexico. Mr. Yates studied animal science at Angelo State University, where he was a member of the 1980 national champion wool judging team. Early in his career he was the manager of Southwestern Wool & Mohair and general manager of Ozona Wool & Mohair. Mr. Yates is a licensed Broker in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma and has been practicing real estate for over 26 years. He is a former director of the Llano County Farm Bureau and a former Llano city councilman. He also served on the boards of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and the Ruidoso Jockey Club and was appointed to the American Quarter Horse Association's national racing committee.
Dale Hoelscher, Position 4
Dale and his brother operate a farming and cow-calf operation growing primarily corn, cotton, and wheat in Bell, Falls, Milam and Robertson counties. They also run a cow-calf operation. He is a member of the Westphalia Knights of Columbus, Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and the Catholic Church of the Visitation. He received the Falls County Young Farmer of the Year Award in 1997. He was a director of the Heart of Texas PCA for four years and served on its audit committee. Mr. Hoelscher was elected to the Capital Farm Credit Board of Directors in 2009.
Kenton B. Kimball, Position 5
Kenton B. Kimball owns and manages a 4,000-acre farm and stocker cattle operation in Sherman County. He has served as president of the Stratford Independent School Board and Stratford Hospital Board. He also has served on the Sherman County Economic Development Board, Sherman County Livestock Show Board, Sherman County Soil and Conservation Board and the Sherman County Appraisal Board. He has a BBA with a major in finance from Kansas State University.
Roy Allan Schmidt, Position 6
Roy Allan Schmidt runs a cow-calf operation in Washington County. He owns and operates LaBahia Antiques and Schmidt Construction LLC, providing on-farm pond and brush work. He is a director and committee member of the Farm Services Agency for Washington County and treasurer of the Endowment Fund of Greenvine Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In addition to serving as a director of Capital Farm Credit for over 20 years, Mr. Schmidt is a director of the Property Owners Association of Washington County. He served on the Burton Independent School District board for nine years. He attended Blinn College and has completed the director development program with the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.
James L. (Jimmy) Wedel, Position 7
James L. (Jimmy)Wedel of Muleshoe farms 2,800 acres in Bailey and Parmer counties. He has been a member of Capital Farm Credit since 1989, and currently serves on the boards of the Texas Corn Producers, the Corn Producers Association of Texas, Plains Cotton Growers, and serves as president of the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative. He has a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Texas Tech University.
Dr. Larry Boleman, Position 8
Dr. Larry Boleman operates a beef cow breeding program with his wife, Pat, in Brazos and Burnet counties, and is the associate vice chancellor for outreach and strategic initiatives for Texas A&M AgriLife in College Station. He has had a long career at Texas A&M University (TAMU), where he started as a student worker in the Beef Cattle Center in 1964, received his bachelor's degree and later his doctorate in beef cattle nutrition. As a beef cattle specialist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service for 30 years, Dr. Boleman also chaired the annual Beef Cattle Short Course at TAMU for 18 years. He has held leadership positions in many industry organizations, including the Texas Purebred Cattle Alliance as past president, the Independent Cattlemen's Association and the Texas Beef Council boards. He has received AgriLife Extension's Team Award for Superior Service, the Texas A&M AgriLife Vice Chancellor's Award in Excellence and the Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award. He is a lifetime member of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition and a Superintendent Hall of Fame honoree of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Texas Club Calf Association. An advocate of 4-H and FFA programs, he coached two of his sons on a national champion 4-H livestock judging team.
BOARD APPOINTED NON-STOCKHOLDER DIRECTORS
Richard Counts began service as a Capital Farm Credit director-elected director February 2005. Mr. Counts retired as a CPA and audit partner with Arthur Andersen, LLP in June 1996. He has served as a financial consultant for various companies from 1996 through 2005.
Lloyd Shoppa of Wharton has served as a director-elected member of the Capital Farm Credit board since February 2005. He is retired as president of Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. and currently owns six John Deere dealerships in South Texas. He is a past president of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford (HEB) Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce and is also a former president of the HEB School board. Mr. Shoppa was inducted into the National Management Association Hall of Fame in 1997.
Jerred Hurst is the Chief Technology Officer for Primitive Social, a digital agency specializing in web design and development, branding, inbound marketing, and social media. In addition, he is a stockholder in Hurst Farm Supply, West Texas' leading John Deere dealership, as well as CTO and Co-owner of Fastpay Payroll, which provides companies with efficient and reliable payroll solutions.
Steve Stevens is a certified public accountant with Stevens & Matthews LLP in Houston. Mr. Stevens is chairman of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Previously, he served on the board of directors for ANCO Insurance in Bryan, Texas, and was advisory director for Adams Resources of Houston. He has served as a director-elected board member for Capital Farm Credit since 2013.
Sharleen Walkoviak is a co-owner of Covenant Technology Services, which provides outsourced IT consulting. She is also a financial executive and certified public accountant. She's been a member of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo since 1995, and became the 6th female lifetime VP in 2016. She is a member of the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame and was selected as one of Houston's 50 Most Influential Women.
