Homesteading can mean many things to many people. For many homeowners, it is simply a tax exemption that allows for breaks on property taxes. But more and more, people are being drawn back to creating actual homesteads, where they work off the land, grow their own food and create sustainable lifestyles in their small corners of the world.
Social media, podcasts and YouTube channels showcase a variety of homesteaders caring for chickens and goats, milking cows, growing vegetables and even smoking, canning and preserving meats and fruits.
According to research published by Deer Busters, Texas was ranked the best state for homesteading based on factors such as affordable land, strong inventory, acreage availability and established agricultural infrastructure.
“Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes the potential for homesteading,” Deer Busters stated. “The Lone Star State led in affordability, land availability and acreage per capita, while also offering the most farmland for sale. For homesteaders, that means lower upfront costs, more options when buying, and the ability to scale operations over time.”
Total farmland showed where agriculture — and by extension, homesteading — was most established. According to the research, Texas has 125 million acres of farmland and 229,000 farms, underscoring a well-developed agricultural ecosystem.
Capital Farm Credit provides rural land loans and home loans to make homesteaders’ dreams come true. CFC also provides financing programs for young, beginning and small agricultural producers working to establish profitable, full -time farming operations.
